Obese pregnant women have a higher risk of birth complications from delivering an overgrown baby, new research shows. The study by the National Institutes of Health is one of the clearest indications to date that obesity had a direct causal impact on the development of a fetus, which could lead to dire complications for both the mother and the baby. As obesity rates in the US continue to rise, findings suggest this not only affects the mother, but leaves children at a greater risk of being obese themselves and developing heart disease later in life.
