A New Normal: Learning to Live with COVID
COVID-19 will not so much disappear, as fade into the background. It will become like the many other common pathogens that sicken people, but also can be controlled with vaccines and drugs. Without the eradication of infection in the long term, COVID will be another disease that affects humans, especially the most vulnerable. In this Facebook live session, we discussed what a health center is doing to adapt to an endemic COVID-19 era. This session included infection control approaches, outreach, on-site and virtual visits, and strategies to improve primary health services.
Culturally Competent Care Learning Collaborative
To assist Health Centers in the adoption of the CLAS Standards and to equip providers with the competencies that will enable them to better treat the increasingly diverse population, NCHPH will be offering a 4-part learning collaborative. The interactive sessions will cover the fundamentals of cultural competency, language access, and building community partnerships through a combination of case studies and didactic learning.
FQHCs and PHAs – Opportunities for Collaboration to Improve Resident Health
During this presentation, NCHPH provided an insight on the background of health centers and public housing residents. NCHPH also discussed the impact of public housing and health along with opportunities for collaboration between health centers and public housing authorities. Case examples of resident health improvement were presented related to health insurance coverage, senior health programs and community safety.
Improving Health of Public Housing Residents Through Intentional Health Center and Housing Authority Partnerships
In collaboration with the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium, the National Center for Health in Public Housing conducted a webinar that highlighted the health center and housing authority partnerships that have led to improved health for public housing residents. The webinar described promising practices on improving health education and outreach, access to care, and distribution of COVID-19 related supplies. The webinar featured speakers from North End Waterfront Health Center (NEW Health) and the Boston Housing Authority.
Panel Discussion on COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing: Promising Practices, Lessons Learned and Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic is changing rapidly and requires different strategies to maintain clinical preventive services including immunization and testing. During this panel discussion NCHPH, La Maestra Community Health Centers, Mile Square Health Center and Zufall Health Center addressed COVID-19 vaccination, testing promising practices, lessons learned and challenges.
Promoting CDC Tips from Former Smokers to Public Housing Residents
The National Center for Health in Public Housing and two PHPC Health Centers recently presented a webinar on smoke-free public housing hosted by HRSA. The purpose of the webinar was to provide information on how PHPCs and PHAs can work together to support smoke-free policy implementation and improve health outcomes within their communities. This webinar highlighted innovation and promising practices from Health Centers in Alabama and New York and identified helpful smoking cessation resources for PHPCs.

Supporting Implementation of Smoking Cessation Programs in Public Housing Primary Care Settings
This Learning Collaborative aimed to identify barriers to implementation of and strategies to establish smoking cessation programs in primary care settings through a series of four sessions: a didactic webinar, covering the behavioral aspects of cessation counseling, the FDA approved medications for cessation and some basic Motivational Interviewing techniques, and a subsequent three learning collaborative sessions, detailing how to conduct each counseling session whether they are individual or group. NCHPH provided a written Protocol booklet to be used as a guide during actual sessions.
The Impact of EHR Use on Health Center Staffing and Productivity
With the evolution of technology and the growth of Health Center Programs in the United States, the use of Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology to improve the provision of patient care in a Health Center setting has grown tremendously in recent years. However, At least 70% of physicians using EHRs continue to attribute their administrative burdens to their EHR use. A recent research Report from GWU Health Workforce Research Center shows how the introduction of new technology influences staffing models, staff roles and workflow, and how these changes in turn influence productivity, coordination between providers and quality of care. This webinar will present the recent study conducted by GWU and its findings, and will provide the perceptions of EHRs effects on staffing and productivity from a Public Housing Primary Care Program Perspective.
The Road to Trauma-Informed Care in Primary Care
Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is an approach in the human service field that assumes that an individual is more likely than not to have a history of trauma. Trauma-Informed Care recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role trauma may play in an individual’s health and wellbeing, – inclusive of both staff and patients. staff. The National Council for Behavioral Health in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente is leading a three-year initiative, Trauma-Informed Primary Care: Fostering Resilience and Recovery, to educate health care providers on the importance of trauma-informed approaches and to create a change package for implementation of standardized and scalable trauma-informed care practices in the primary care setting . Zufall Health Center in Dover, NJ, has been working with National Council experts to pilot resources, tools and processes, developed by a multidisciplinary team of health care stakeholders, designed to guide the planning, implementation and evaluation of a trauma-informed approach in primary care. During this webinar we will hear from the National Council and Zufall Health Center about Trauma Informed Primary Care, lessons learned and resources for Health Centers on how to implement a trauma-informed care program.

This NCHPH Learning Collaborative discussed ways to debunk the myth that smoking is an effective way to deal with stress, enumerated various proven stress management techniques, in depth, that can be used to maintain a quit, and discussed how to successfully teach these techniques to patients.
Transformation of Public Housing
During this conference call, NCHPH lead a discussion with PHPC advisory group members on the Moving to Work Demonstration program and Rental Assistance Demonstration program. An overview of the most recent National Health Center Needs Assessment results were highlighted in addition to discussing chronic medical conditions affecting PHPC patients.

Addressing Violence in Public Housing Communities
The purpose of this report is to provide Health Centers located in or immediately accessible to public housing with best practices and examples of violence prevention and intervention programs that can be implemented in their communities. NCHPH conducted background research on violence and crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reporting Program, interviewed four Health Center staff, and analyzed the interviews to identify overlapping themes, lessons learned, and successful strategies used to address and prevent violence.
Housing and Health: Building Partnerships to Support Public Housing Residents
Public housing residents often have complex health conditions and are at risk for experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Partnerships between health and housing agencies can improve access to comprehensive health and social services that support public housing residents. The National Center for Health and Public Housing (NCHPH) and the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium (NNCC) are pleased to support this case study publication highlighting successful Health Center Programs and public housing partnerships to improve the health of public housing residents.
