According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Resident Characteristics Report, 23% of public housing households report to have at least one person with a disability. NCHPH collaborates with federal, state and community organizations to convene and implement training and technical assistance activities that enable health centers improve access to care for people living with disabilities.
People with disabilities face multiple barriers that impact their health outcomes including attitudinal challenges such as stigma from health care providers, communication by health providers that do not factor in disabilities such as blindness, physical barriers that limit physical access, and social factors including lack of transportation to appointments, lack of consistent employment, and violence in their homes or communities all of which affect access to care.
