Building a Program to Stop Smoking Among Health Center Communities (Presented in Spanish)
About This Learning Collaborative (English):

Health center communities consisted of patient populations best served in languages other than English and at risk of being diagnosed with cancer due to tobacco use. To target these populations, particularly those who spoke Spanish, this Learning Collaborative, presented by the National Center for Health in Public Housing, focused on how smoking cessation programs could be built in health centers to support smoking cessation among these special populations in public housing.

The sessions were conducted in Spanish with English interpretation, focused on promoting smoking abstinence among Spanish-speaking smokers, and discussed potential quitting strategies.

Enhancing Use of Clinical Preventive Services for Older Adults Living in Public Housing
The National Center for Health in Public Housing hosted a series exploring the intersection of clinical science and health related risks affecting health in aging populations residing in public housing.

This learning collaborative focused on identifying barriers to accessing preventive care, such as socioeconomic factors, limited health literacy, and lack of transportation, which impacted older adults in these communities. With a particular emphasis on evidence-based strategies, it covered how healthcare providers and public health practitioners could collaborate to improve access to screenings, emergency care, and chronic disease management programs, ultimately enhancing the health outcomes of this vulnerable group.

Participants gained insight into how income, education, and neighborhood environment influenced the utilization of preventive services among older adults. The training also delved into practical solutions for overcoming these barriers, such as implementing community health worker programs, increasing mobile health services, and engaging community organizations in outreach efforts. By equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to address these issues, the sessions fostered a more integrated approach to public health and clinical care for older adults in public housing.

Incorporating Peer Support into Substance Use Disorder Treatment
Peer support is an invaluable asset for patients struggling with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Through provision of and networking to peer support services, health center staff provide patients with the social and emotional foundation which empowers their recovery and acts as a critical support during the mental, emotional and physical toll of recovery from SUD.

In this learning collaborative, join Dr. Kevin Lombardi MD, MPH, Ms. Fide Pineda Sandoval CHES, and the NCHPH Department of Research as we present an interactive review of the latest promising practices, clinical interventions and social services support recommended for individuals suffering with SUD. Material will balance the clinical primary care and associated social services realms, including those directly relevant to program managers, community health workers, social workers and nurses.
