Although overall rates of alcohol consumption among youth declined in the past decade, alcohol remained the most frequently consumed substance by this age group, despite the legal drinking age in the United States being 21 years old.

The 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that over a 30-day period, 29% of high school students drank alcohol, and 14% reported binge drinking (defined as four or more alcoholic beverages at a time for females and five or more for males). Any alcohol use by adolescents carried some level of risk, contributing to approximately 3,500 deaths annually among youth younger than 21 years.

This webinar highlighted the goals of motivational interviewing, identified its key principles, and explored how this approach could help prevent alcohol misuse among young adults living in public housing.
