The National Center for Health in Public Housing (NCHPH) and the National Nurse-led Care Consortium (NNCC) hosted a webinar focused on strategies to support smoking cessation and substance use disorder (SUD) in primary care for residents of public housing. Speakers presented gaps in knowledge regarding policy related to public housing and smoking, more recently around the increased use and concern of vaping. Subject matter experts discussed the importance of clinical interaction, readiness to change, and implementation of motivational interviewing in mental health treatment while addressing substance use disorder.

Slides and Recording Now Available: A Home-Based Approach to Prevent and Manage Diabetes Among the Aging Population and People with Disabilities Living in HUD-Assisted Facilities

Diabetes affects more than 37 million American adults, and 96 million adults have prediabetes, putting them at a high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. It is well documented that people with disabilities in minority communities are disproportionately affected by this chronic disease and are often reluctant to seek screening or participate in lifestyle change programs. Today more than ever, it is essential to understand and address the many needs of this hard-to-reach population. This webinar by NCHPH offered strategies for engaging the aging population and people with disabilities in diabetes prevention and control management programs through a home-care approach.

Slides and Recording Now Available: Partners in Health: The Role of the Behavioral Health Providers in Diabetes Prevention and Management

People with mental illness, substance use disorders (SUDs), or both are at increased risk for developing diabetes, a chronic metabolic disease with numerous long-term health consequences. Untreated behavioral health disorders can exacerbate diabetes symptoms and complications. This webinar discussed how behavioral health providers can help patients with diabetes and identify successful interventions that can be used for people with diabetes.

Slides and Recording Now Available: Diabetes 101 for Behavioral Health Professionals: Understanding the Basics of Diabetes Prevention and Management

As a behavioral health professional, you will be working with people with diabetes and people at risk of diabetes who may struggle with its management and prevention. This webinar provided background information on common struggles and issues facing people with diabetes and those at risk of diabetes in public housing settings.

Slides and Recording Now Available: Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Professionals Sessions 1-4

Throughout the collaborative, we took a detailed look at key concepts regarding culture as a SDOH. This includes an overview of the literature and key developments in the field. Additionally, we engaged in a collective and reflective approach of cultural competency as it pertains to clinical practice to develop our understanding of both our patient’s and our own cultural background. Finally, we critically inspected and reviewed validated screening tools, explored their practical application in difficult situations and put them into action with volunteer patient actors.
