The National Center for Health in Public Housing hosted a series exploring the intersection of clinical science and health related risks affecting health in aging populations residing in public housing.
This learning collaborative focused on identifying barriers to accessing preventive care, such as socioeconomic factors, limited health literacy, and lack of transportation, which impacted older adults in these communities. With a particular emphasis on evidence-based strategies, it covered how healthcare providers and public health practitioners could collaborate to improve access to screenings, emergency care, and chronic disease management programs, ultimately enhancing the health outcomes of this vulnerable group.
Participants gained insight into how income, education, and neighborhood environment influenced the utilization of preventive services among older adults. The training also delved into practical solutions for overcoming these barriers, such as implementing community health worker programs, increasing mobile health services, and engaging community organizations in outreach efforts. By equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to address these issues, the sessions fostered a more integrated approach to public health and clinical care for older adults in public housing.
